Design & Innovation Centre

Recognising that to develop world-ready young people who can embrace global challenges, the college’s curriculum needs to transcend traditional discipline boundaries and school structures, St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar engaged B2 to develop concept designs for its proposed Design & Innovation Centre.

As the first stage in the College’s Master Plan, the future centre will support and underpin the evolution of its pedagogical approach and cement a design vision and precedent for future development.

Intended to be a multidisciplinary home for collaboration and learning innovation, the centre features highly specialised and flexible learning spaces connected to smaller learning centres. Various workspaces, studios, labs, and break-out spaces aim to link artistry, STEM, innovation, and entrepreneurship to promote sustainable, ethical, appropriate, and innovative learning.

Situated in the geographical and literal heart of the campus, its architectural language and aesthetics are designed to inspire, excite, and enthuse staff and students to embrace new and varied learning experiences, growth and excellence.

The curved, perforated façade welcomes people, sparking curiosity and interest, while sweeping curves reflect the natural undulations of the landscape and solid brick elements reflect the surrounding buildings. This combination creates a bold, iconic, and distinctive structure that reflects the college’s core values of curiosity, character, respect, and courage.

Inside, the combination of natural light, high ceilings and a high level of transparency between spaces create seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. Warm, natural and tactile material choices evoke senses of comfort and familiarity, welcoming and inviting visitors and promoting staff and student wellbeing by stimulating the senses and evoking feelings.

While visually striking and stimulating, these features also employ sustainable and passive design principles, providing natural ventilation, reducing the need for heating and cooling and maximising energy efficiency.

‘I was particularly impressed with Brent and B2’s response in a number of areas... B2’s knowledge of current best practices in schools was impressive… The timeliness of draft presentations and the ease and speed with which updated drafts were shared was exceptional… The final product is professional, aesthetically pleasing and frankly, exciting.'”
